Workstead
Silo Hotel
This adaptive reuse project reimagines an 1860’s 12-story grain silo as a 165 room boutique hotel. Paired with a ground-up modern pavilion, Workstead’s design concept is rooted in contrast. The original silos are anchored by a sloping desert garden at the front entrance, echoing a monumental butte at the rear of the property. The rear terrace is situated between the new hotel pavilion and the landmass, and features a sunken pool that completes a sequence of platforms throughout the interior and exterior of the property. The silo guest room design reimagines the cylindrical space, while maintaining the unique character and material integrity of the structure. A series of delicate window slits in the silo walls form a perforated grid, looking over downtown Tempe and the landscape.
